In this episode we talk about safe websites safe by looking at Microsoft Defender Web protection and how to check if a website is malicious/scam or safe/legit. We have used our website as an example to show you what to look for with these tools.

18
00:01:15.120 --> 00:01:18.599
now here is your host, Joyce Petrowski.

19
00:01:19.959 --> 00:01:23.840
Hi, everyone, welcome back. So let's talk about scams. I'm

20
00:01:23.879 --> 00:01:28.840
Joyce Petrowski, founder of Rose Resources Outreach to Safeguard the Elderly.

21
00:01:29.239 --> 00:01:33.280
You can find more information on our website at Roseadvocacy

22
00:01:33.599 --> 00:01:36.319
dot org and on the homepage if you scroll to

23
00:01:36.359 --> 00:01:38.319
the bottom, you'll find where you can sign up for

24
00:01:38.359 --> 00:01:43.120
our email newsletters and or are mailed newsletters. Those come

25
00:01:43.159 --> 00:01:47.359
out monthly, and you'll find our social media links. I

26
00:01:47.400 --> 00:01:49.680
believe those are up at the top of the page.

27
00:01:50.680 --> 00:01:54.480
So today I want to talk about how can you

28
00:01:55.280 --> 00:01:59.959
determine the safety of a website. There have been article

29
00:02:00.280 --> 00:02:08.639
written that scammers have created hundreds of thousands of fake websites.

30
00:02:10.039 --> 00:02:12.520
This is just part of how they've evolved over the years,

31
00:02:13.080 --> 00:02:18.919
and they you know, they'll they'll set up fake websites

32
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:22.280
to impersonate legitimate companies to make you think you're on

33
00:02:22.360 --> 00:02:26.840
the legitimate company website. So a couple of the things,

34
00:02:27.319 --> 00:02:31.680
so the U r L which is the actual website address,

35
00:02:31.800 --> 00:02:40.719
the http S colon to backslashes, and then the www

36
00:02:40.879 --> 00:02:44.479
dot Roseadvocacy dot org, so you can check that to

37
00:02:44.599 --> 00:02:47.639
make sure it has an S, so it's the h

38
00:02:47.919 --> 00:02:51.199
T T P and then an S which means it's

39
00:02:51.240 --> 00:02:56.000
secure that the owner of the website would have had

40
00:02:56.039 --> 00:03:02.560
to have purchased a security certificate or security license from.

41
00:03:02.879 --> 00:03:04.879
And I'm going to use go Daddy as an example

42
00:03:04.919 --> 00:03:08.879
because that's where I purchased Rose Advocacy domain from and

43
00:03:08.919 --> 00:03:13.039
then got the security uh certificate through them as well.

44
00:03:14.360 --> 00:03:19.280
There's also sometimes you'll see a padlock icon and I'm

45
00:03:19.280 --> 00:03:21.520
going to share my screen so I can I can

46
00:03:21.599 --> 00:03:25.879
show you guys this, So give me just one second here.

47
00:03:29.759 --> 00:03:33.199
Let's see here, all right, So I'm going to go

48
00:03:33.319 --> 00:03:42.080
to the website and I'm going to type in Roseadvocacy

49
00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:48.199
dot org, and that's our that are This lock here

50
00:03:48.280 --> 00:03:50.919
is not the padlock that I'm talking about. That happens

51
00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:54.879
to be our logo. But when I type it in,

52
00:03:55.960 --> 00:03:58.319
it goes you see our logo. Right there is a lock.

53
00:03:58.560 --> 00:04:03.159
But you'll see these They look like toggle switches. One

54
00:04:03.319 --> 00:04:05.680
goes to the left, one goes to the right. That

55
00:04:08.400 --> 00:04:11.280
is where you would click on. It says view site information.

56
00:04:12.479 --> 00:04:15.680
So if I click on it, it shows you the website

57
00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:19.000
and then it says connection is secure. But you could

58
00:04:19.000 --> 00:04:21.319
go a little bit farther there you see the padlock

59
00:04:21.920 --> 00:04:26.279
connection is secure, and it explains what that is, you know,

60
00:04:27.240 --> 00:04:30.639
and you can learn more about that. It says the

61
00:04:30.680 --> 00:04:34.959
certificate is valid. So that's one way you can look

62
00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:37.360
at it. Now, if you go back, you can also

63
00:04:37.480 --> 00:04:39.399
go in and you can look at a whole bunch

64
00:04:39.439 --> 00:04:44.800
of information on cookies and site data and and all

65
00:04:44.800 --> 00:04:46.600
of that. I'm not going to get into that today,

66
00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:49.519
but that is something you can go, you know, farther

67
00:04:49.639 --> 00:04:53.639
into here. It tells you what cookies they're used to

68
00:04:53.680 --> 00:04:57.519
remember you, for example, to sign you in or personalize ads,

69
00:04:57.959 --> 00:05:00.480
and to manage cookies for all sites. You can go

70
00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:02.560
right to your settings. And we talk about this a

71
00:05:02.560 --> 00:05:05.639
lot in the presentations is whenever you get on a website,

72
00:05:05.680 --> 00:05:10.240
it usually will come up and say we you must

73
00:05:10.319 --> 00:05:15.319
either accept all the cookies. Sometimes it'll say, uh, manage

74
00:05:15.360 --> 00:05:19.759
the cookies or accept only necessary cookies. Well you really

75
00:05:19.759 --> 00:05:23.360
should accept only necessary or you could go in to

76
00:05:23.519 --> 00:05:25.639
manage and then it'll show you all the cookies and

77
00:05:25.680 --> 00:05:28.040
make sure all of them are turned off except for

78
00:05:28.079 --> 00:05:31.279
the strictly necessary. And then this is just a little

79
00:05:31.319 --> 00:05:35.800
bit more information on manage on device, site data, and

80
00:05:35.839 --> 00:05:39.360
then site settings again, you could go in here and

81
00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:41.480
you can look at all the different you know the

82
00:05:41.519 --> 00:05:46.319
different settings for the website. So that is up here

83
00:05:46.360 --> 00:05:49.279
as the I'm gonna exit out of here. This looks

84
00:05:49.319 --> 00:05:54.480
like a little toggle switch here, one to the left,

85
00:05:54.519 --> 00:05:57.639
one to the right. Sometimes you'll see a padlock. Again,

86
00:05:57.680 --> 00:06:00.000
if I click on this, you'll see the padlock here

87
00:06:00.120 --> 00:06:04.879
showing connection is secure. So that's a quick way to

88
00:06:04.959 --> 00:06:09.079
look to make sure that yes, this security certificate is

89
00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:12.120
valid and that the site is listed as secure. But

90
00:06:12.279 --> 00:06:16.040
as scammers evolved, you know, when they get these they

91
00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:20.879
buy these domains to put these fake websites on. They

92
00:06:20.879 --> 00:06:25.240
could also buy a security certificate. Right, it's not that

93
00:06:25.319 --> 00:06:28.920
expensive to buy a domain, and it's not that expensive

94
00:06:28.920 --> 00:06:32.079
to buy the security certificate. So I think now that

95
00:06:32.120 --> 00:06:34.000
they know a lot of people start looking for that

96
00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:38.240
pad luck that they're looking for the HTTPS to show

97
00:06:38.240 --> 00:06:41.560
that it's secured. That they're upping their game and they're like, okay,

98
00:06:41.600 --> 00:06:43.720
well we're going to have this on our site too

99
00:06:43.879 --> 00:06:47.439
to make people believe that it is a secure site.

100
00:06:47.519 --> 00:06:51.000
So another thing you can do is you can examine

101
00:06:51.040 --> 00:06:55.360
the content. Right, and this was an old way where

102
00:06:55.879 --> 00:06:58.759
you could look for you know a lot of grammatical

103
00:06:58.879 --> 00:07:03.199
errors or spelling, awkward phrasing, all kinds of stuff like that.

104
00:07:03.360 --> 00:07:07.360
But we've talked a lot about artificial intelligence and AI

105
00:07:09.040 --> 00:07:13.639
and that that right there, like the chat GBT that

106
00:07:13.959 --> 00:07:19.639
helps them not have all those grammatical errors, those misspellings,

107
00:07:20.199 --> 00:07:23.160
all of that stuff. It's going to give them everything

108
00:07:23.279 --> 00:07:25.920
they need to, you know, put on on the website.

109
00:07:25.959 --> 00:07:30.680
So you can't necessarily look at that as well. Again

110
00:07:30.759 --> 00:07:34.439
you can or not again sorry, but you can look

111
00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:38.639
for contact information, you know, on on the website and

112
00:07:38.680 --> 00:07:42.360
you can see ours down here at the bottom. You'll

113
00:07:42.360 --> 00:07:44.839
see where we have our mailing address, we have our

114
00:07:44.879 --> 00:07:50.040
phone number, our eFax, our email address, you know, a

115
00:07:50.079 --> 00:07:53.839
bunch of different links here for things. We have our disclaimer,

116
00:07:54.480 --> 00:08:02.040
who designed and is hosted tact information as well. It

117
00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:05.360
just kind of helps it seem a little bit more legitimate.

118
00:08:05.800 --> 00:08:10.199
But then there's some they have these online tools now

119
00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:14.079
that you can get on and use to kind of

120
00:08:14.480 --> 00:08:17.399
take it a step further to look at the safety

121
00:08:17.680 --> 00:08:19.680
or the security of a website. So I'm going to

122
00:08:19.680 --> 00:08:24.600
get into those and this is URL void or web

123
00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:30.040
of trust. I'm going to get into this URL void

124
00:08:30.079 --> 00:08:35.320
here and we're going to do this who is look up?

125
00:08:35.360 --> 00:08:41.279
And I believe I'm saying that correctly, and I can.

126
00:08:41.399 --> 00:08:45.399
The International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is the

127
00:08:45.720 --> 00:08:49.320
regulator for the who is database of domain names. They

128
00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:51.159
go all the way back to nineteen eighty two, so

129
00:08:51.159 --> 00:08:55.159
they've got a lot of data. The information that you're

130
00:08:55.159 --> 00:08:58.799
going to find in that database can vary from domain

131
00:08:58.840 --> 00:09:02.200
registrar to main registrar, but you should be able to

132
00:09:02.240 --> 00:09:06.639
see the date somebody registered their webs their domain, their website,

133
00:09:06.879 --> 00:09:11.600
if it's expired, the last time the domain was updated.

134
00:09:12.639 --> 00:09:16.559
Who the registrar are is, like who the registrar is?

135
00:09:17.960 --> 00:09:21.159
Like I explained before, mine was go Daddy, so that's

136
00:09:21.200 --> 00:09:24.919
one of them. And then you could probably see the

137
00:09:24.960 --> 00:09:27.639
owner of the domain. But you're not going to see

138
00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:34.360
a lot of personal identifiable information. They had some GDPR

139
00:09:34.639 --> 00:09:40.919
regulations which made them the who is not show personal

140
00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:45.399
I personally identifiable information in there. So you're going to see.

141
00:09:45.399 --> 00:09:48.200
When we do Rose Advocacy's website and look at it,

142
00:09:48.200 --> 00:09:50.600
you're going to see a lot of information that says redacted,

143
00:09:50.720 --> 00:09:54.559
and that's because they are not allowed to make that

144
00:09:55.519 --> 00:09:59.200
publicly available to everyone. So let's go back up here

145
00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:03.000
and you can tell I'm just going to click here

146
00:10:03.039 --> 00:10:06.720
because I have already typed it in once, so Roseadvocacy

147
00:10:06.759 --> 00:10:09.840
dot org. You don't need to put the www. You

148
00:10:09.919 --> 00:10:13.320
just put the domain name, which is Roseadvocacy. And then

149
00:10:13.360 --> 00:10:17.039
we're a nonprofit, so it's dot org. And then here

150
00:10:17.120 --> 00:10:22.000
I have to click because I'm not a robot, and

151
00:10:22.039 --> 00:10:24.200
we're going to look it up. And so you're going

152
00:10:24.279 --> 00:10:30.519
to see here where it has the domain name Roseadvocacy

153
00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:35.000
dot org. The registry ID here it is is who's

154
00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:38.399
the registrar. I got the domain at GoDaddy, so you're

155
00:10:38.440 --> 00:10:41.399
going to see that come up there and the URL

156
00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:46.120
for them. And then the last date that it was

157
00:10:46.240 --> 00:10:53.279
updated was it looks like November twenty fifth, twenty twenty four.

158
00:10:54.039 --> 00:10:58.320
You're so that was almost six months ago. Creation date.

159
00:10:58.440 --> 00:11:01.480
You're going to see that it was. This website was

160
00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:07.519
purchased August twenty seventh, twenty twenty one. It expires August

161
00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:11.639
twenty seventh, twenty twenty five. I'll have I have to

162
00:11:11.679 --> 00:11:15.279
go in every year and renew the domain and pay

163
00:11:15.320 --> 00:11:17.559
the fee, and so once I do that in the

164
00:11:17.559 --> 00:11:19.799
next couple months, you'll see that this will get updated

165
00:11:19.840 --> 00:11:23.559
to August twenty seventh, twenty twenty six. You're going to

166
00:11:23.600 --> 00:11:26.679
have some information on go daddy, who is the registrar

167
00:11:27.480 --> 00:11:32.240
there if you wanted to report abuse, that's their email

168
00:11:32.320 --> 00:11:36.080
number or their email address, their phone number. And then

169
00:11:36.080 --> 00:11:38.240
you're going to get down here and you're going to

170
00:11:38.320 --> 00:11:42.440
find all this information the registrant, the name, the organ

171
00:11:43.240 --> 00:11:45.919
the organization, but the street, the city, all of this,

172
00:11:46.039 --> 00:11:49.000
the phone. All of this stuff is redacted and that

173
00:11:49.159 --> 00:11:52.039
was because of those new regulations which this is personally

174
00:11:52.120 --> 00:11:55.679
identifiable information, and so they have all this redacted. But

175
00:11:55.960 --> 00:11:59.159
again you can find a lot of information right here

176
00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:01.799
at the beginning. To find out if it's a you know,

177
00:12:01.919 --> 00:12:04.840
a brand new you're going to be I want to

178
00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:08.799
be a little bit suspicious if if the creation date,

179
00:12:08.840 --> 00:12:11.879
if it's a brand new website, maybe if it just

180
00:12:11.919 --> 00:12:15.279
doesn't get updated at all, just you know, kind of

181
00:12:15.279 --> 00:12:17.840
look it out. You look it over, and you can

182
00:12:17.879 --> 00:12:21.039
also you've got the email address, the website for the

183
00:12:21.639 --> 00:12:23.840
for the registrar to kind of check them out to

184
00:12:23.919 --> 00:12:27.919
make sure that they're that they're good. All right. So

185
00:12:28.039 --> 00:12:32.159
then let's look at the next thing here is let

186
00:12:32.200 --> 00:12:36.360
me go back to this PDF we can use again.

187
00:12:36.440 --> 00:12:40.600
This is a U R L void dot com. We're

188
00:12:40.600 --> 00:12:42.440
going to go back into that, and this is going

189
00:12:42.480 --> 00:12:51.039
to kind of look up uh the uh. You can

190
00:12:51.080 --> 00:12:54.639
go in and again type in the domain, the website

191
00:12:54.679 --> 00:13:00.279
address or the domain and then scan website and you're

192
00:13:00.320 --> 00:13:03.519
going to come up and it's going to show the

193
00:13:03.559 --> 00:13:06.720
website address. You're going to look at it. The last

194
00:13:06.720 --> 00:13:10.519
analysis was done three months ago. I can click here

195
00:13:10.559 --> 00:13:14.200
to have it to re scan, but there was zero

196
00:13:14.320 --> 00:13:17.679
out of thirty nine detection counts. You can see it

197
00:13:17.799 --> 00:13:19.799
matches right here with what it said in the who

198
00:13:19.919 --> 00:13:24.960
is directory that this domain was registered on August twenty seventh,

199
00:13:25.080 --> 00:13:27.080
twenty one. You could go into the who is look

200
00:13:27.120 --> 00:13:30.399
up right through here you could check out the DNS

201
00:13:30.480 --> 00:13:35.600
records as well. Gives you the IP address. This happens

202
00:13:35.639 --> 00:13:43.080
to be the website of the company that hosts Rose Advocacy.

203
00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:45.960
Website going to tell you the server locations in the

204
00:13:46.039 --> 00:13:51.000
United States, which makes sense, and then you're going to

205
00:13:51.080 --> 00:13:54.039
come down here. And this is interesting. So this is

206
00:13:54.120 --> 00:13:58.320
where this website scans all of these different engines here

207
00:13:58.639 --> 00:14:00.600
and they're going to tell you if they find anything.

208
00:14:00.600 --> 00:14:02.919
And that zero out of thirty nine I think it

209
00:14:03.080 --> 00:14:07.799
was right up here. All of this is nothing found,

210
00:14:07.879 --> 00:14:11.159
Nothing found. On all these different Now if you're interested,

211
00:14:11.519 --> 00:14:15.440
you can go in here underview more details and it's

212
00:14:15.480 --> 00:14:24.639
going this one here the fake sites list the artist

213
00:14:24.720 --> 00:14:29.039
against four one nine. So it'll have a site name,

214
00:14:29.840 --> 00:14:34.519
it'll say active date added, updated, all of that, and

215
00:14:34.600 --> 00:14:38.840
so you can go through it'll tell you exactly, you know,

216
00:14:38.960 --> 00:14:42.960
what the what the site name is and all of that.

217
00:14:43.120 --> 00:14:45.559
So this is a fake sites list if you want

218
00:14:45.559 --> 00:14:51.039
to go in and view all of these, you know,

219
00:14:51.080 --> 00:14:54.240
to kind of check them out. It looks like there's

220
00:14:54.759 --> 00:14:58.000
one hundred and seventy thousand and five hundred and sixty

221
00:14:58.120 --> 00:15:03.840
four on this, So I'm going to get out of

222
00:15:04.080 --> 00:15:06.559
there and go back here again. You can go all

223
00:15:06.559 --> 00:15:09.639
the way down pick another one right here, let's view

224
00:15:09.639 --> 00:15:15.559
more details on this one. Well, that says that might

225
00:15:15.799 --> 00:15:23.200
just be let's see. Let me go pick another one bitdefender.

226
00:15:23.440 --> 00:15:29.840
Let's go into that. We haven't seen any so bitdefender

227
00:15:30.320 --> 00:15:33.960
is looking at the website. They haven't seen any suspicious

228
00:15:34.000 --> 00:15:40.000
activity from this website. So that's great. So again that's

229
00:15:40.120 --> 00:15:43.279
just another way you can go in and check out

230
00:15:45.200 --> 00:15:50.440
the reputation and how safe the website is. Now there's

231
00:15:50.480 --> 00:15:53.320
also it says check for reviews you can, you know,

232
00:15:53.440 --> 00:15:56.120
look on Google reviews. You know, you can look on

233
00:15:56.159 --> 00:15:59.879
the website to see if there's testimonials. Kind of just

234
00:16:00.120 --> 00:16:03.720
helps to help you to gauge the credibility of the website.

235
00:16:03.759 --> 00:16:08.320
There's also this Google Transparency Report, so you can see

236
00:16:08.320 --> 00:16:10.879
the safety rating of a website from Google. So I'm

237
00:16:10.919 --> 00:16:17.679
going to go in here and I'm going to type

238
00:16:17.720 --> 00:16:23.039
in the Rosadvocacy dot Org and hit enter to search.

239
00:16:26.559 --> 00:16:31.519
So the information was last updated on May thirteenth. Site

240
00:16:31.519 --> 00:16:34.639
safety can change. The site safety can change over time,

241
00:16:34.720 --> 00:16:37.799
so check back for updates. But as of this second

242
00:16:37.799 --> 00:16:41.399
they found no unsafe content found. So that's another way

243
00:16:41.440 --> 00:16:45.559
through the Google Transparency Report that you can check things

244
00:16:45.600 --> 00:16:48.320
out as well. And then the last thing listed on

245
00:16:48.399 --> 00:16:51.840
here is Better Business Bureau. It's another way through. It's

246
00:16:51.840 --> 00:16:54.399
another avenue for you to do more research to see

247
00:16:54.399 --> 00:17:00.480
if people have had complaints and how they've resolved and

248
00:17:01.240 --> 00:17:04.640
all of that on there. So I'm going to stop

249
00:17:04.720 --> 00:17:12.160
sharing the screen and excuse me. So there's a variety

250
00:17:12.160 --> 00:17:14.799
of different ways. Just remember, you know, when you look

251
00:17:14.839 --> 00:17:20.839
for that padlock icon, excuse me, I get a drink here,

252
00:17:20.839 --> 00:17:28.000
I gotta tickle on all right, or that little toggle

253
00:17:28.039 --> 00:17:32.799
switch to the left hand side of the the website address.

254
00:17:33.759 --> 00:17:35.680
You can click on that and you can review the

255
00:17:35.720 --> 00:17:38.720
site settings and see if there's a safety certificate or

256
00:17:38.720 --> 00:17:42.680
there's security certificate is valid if it shows that they're

257
00:17:42.680 --> 00:17:46.799
a secure website. But as I said, you know, scammers,

258
00:17:47.319 --> 00:17:54.640
they can buy those security certificates as well when they

259
00:17:54.720 --> 00:17:56.839
when they buy the domain, So you kind of have

260
00:17:56.960 --> 00:18:00.359
to you have to add some things. You need to

261
00:18:00.400 --> 00:18:03.400
research it out. Like we said, Better Business Bureau looked

262
00:18:03.440 --> 00:18:05.799
on the website to see if there's any contact information,

263
00:18:09.240 --> 00:18:12.039
and the examining the content. Yes, you know, if you

264
00:18:12.079 --> 00:18:14.880
see stuff that's just really bad grammar, all of that stuff,

265
00:18:14.920 --> 00:18:18.200
then that right, there's a telltale sign that you might

266
00:18:18.200 --> 00:18:22.599
want to get off that. But as we said, with

267
00:18:22.640 --> 00:18:25.640
the artificial intelligence, that really helps the scammers and they

268
00:18:25.680 --> 00:18:30.000
really don't have the bad grammar and the you know,

269
00:18:30.079 --> 00:18:33.319
all of that stuff anymore because of the artificial intelligence,

270
00:18:33.359 --> 00:18:38.319
the chat gbts all of that. But use those online tools.

271
00:18:38.440 --> 00:18:44.759
The the uh you are l void uh dot com.

272
00:18:44.799 --> 00:18:48.160
I'm gonna look that back up again, so yeah, you

273
00:18:49.039 --> 00:18:52.960
r l void dot com. You can go in and

274
00:18:53.119 --> 00:18:55.799
check out the reputation of websites you can go into

275
00:18:55.799 --> 00:18:58.480
the who is and look that up, make sure everything

276
00:18:58.640 --> 00:19:04.240
makes sense as to you know when the domain was registered,

277
00:19:04.319 --> 00:19:08.160
when it's been updated, and then use the Google Transparency Report,

278
00:19:08.559 --> 00:19:15.039
which is Transparency Report dot Google dot com, and then

279
00:19:15.240 --> 00:19:21.119
backslash safe hyphen browsing and I will go in once

280
00:19:21.160 --> 00:19:24.119
this is all loaded up to YouTube, and I will

281
00:19:24.160 --> 00:19:29.640
put these links in there as well. But then I'm

282
00:19:29.680 --> 00:19:33.079
gonna go into one other thing. I use this a lot.

283
00:19:33.960 --> 00:19:38.160
I use it on my phone, especially when I'm searching

284
00:19:38.400 --> 00:19:40.400
on the Internet. I know a lot of people like

285
00:19:40.480 --> 00:19:43.960
to use I think it duc duc Go is one,

286
00:19:44.119 --> 00:19:47.799
and there's a couple other ones that have more of

287
00:19:47.839 --> 00:19:52.440
a private browsing uh, when you're browsing the Internet, so

288
00:19:52.480 --> 00:19:55.400
it's not really tracking cookies and all kinds of stuff

289
00:19:55.440 --> 00:19:58.640
like that on you. This one is called in cognito

290
00:19:58.920 --> 00:20:03.440
mode U and you can when you open up your browser,

291
00:20:03.680 --> 00:20:08.119
meaning if you use Chrome, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, you

292
00:20:08.119 --> 00:20:11.720
can pray. If you have a if you have a

293
00:20:11.759 --> 00:20:17.559
Mac computer, you're gonna want to click the command shift

294
00:20:17.920 --> 00:20:22.079
and then end as in Nancy. Any other computer you're

295
00:20:22.079 --> 00:20:25.240
going to do control shift and then end as in Nancy,

296
00:20:25.480 --> 00:20:30.400
and that opens up a new incognito window in Chrome,

297
00:20:31.920 --> 00:20:35.960
or you can select new incognito window from the browser

298
00:20:36.039 --> 00:20:39.920
menu in Chrome or Firefox, and once you select that,

299
00:20:41.559 --> 00:20:44.480
it's a new window opens and it'll show that it's

300
00:20:44.480 --> 00:20:48.720
in the incognito mode and usually has an icon in

301
00:20:48.759 --> 00:20:52.119
the top corner, and then you can you can start searching.

302
00:20:52.279 --> 00:20:58.000
So basically what that does is the majority of the

303
00:20:58.039 --> 00:21:00.839
web browsers out there, they keep a wreck of the

304
00:21:00.880 --> 00:21:04.759
websites and pages that you visit. By default, they're storing

305
00:21:04.880 --> 00:21:08.039
your history of what you've been doing, what you've been

306
00:21:08.079 --> 00:21:13.519
browsing on the internet, so you can easily find it

307
00:21:13.640 --> 00:21:15.880
and go back to it if you want to later on.

308
00:21:16.920 --> 00:21:20.480
But most browsers have the option to temporarily suspend this

309
00:21:20.559 --> 00:21:23.599
record keeping, meaning the web pages you'll visit will be

310
00:21:23.680 --> 00:21:27.720
kept private, and that's to anyone else that is using

311
00:21:28.799 --> 00:21:31.640
that same browser. So every browser has a different name

312
00:21:31.640 --> 00:21:35.240
for the setting. Chrome we talked about it's incognito mode,

313
00:21:35.359 --> 00:21:39.960
Microsoft Edge, it's in private mode. Safari is private browsing,

314
00:21:40.119 --> 00:21:45.839
Firefox is private mode. So we talked about how you

315
00:21:45.880 --> 00:21:51.079
can go in and find those but if a lot

316
00:21:51.079 --> 00:21:53.880
of people might go in and manually clear their history,

317
00:21:54.480 --> 00:21:58.559
clear their cash or their cookies, because sometimes when you

318
00:21:58.680 --> 00:22:02.880
have a lot of those going on, the cash or cookies,

319
00:22:05.359 --> 00:22:10.440
sometimes it might affect your computer and how it might

320
00:22:10.640 --> 00:22:14.400
slow down how your computer's working, or it just might

321
00:22:14.519 --> 00:22:18.640
not work like it used to. I'm trying to think

322
00:22:18.680 --> 00:22:20.680
of an example, and I can't off the top of

323
00:22:20.720 --> 00:22:22.640
my head, but I know a lot of times i'll

324
00:22:23.039 --> 00:22:26.039
I'll like shoot an email over to I'll be looking

325
00:22:26.079 --> 00:22:29.799
at something on Rose Advocacy's website and I click on

326
00:22:29.839 --> 00:22:33.559
something and it just doesn't It doesn't bring the pay

327
00:22:33.720 --> 00:22:38.000
the new page up like it should. It maybe doesn't

328
00:22:38.000 --> 00:22:41.519
bring it up at all. And I'll email my website

329
00:22:41.559 --> 00:22:43.240
guy and say, hey, you know, is there something wrong

330
00:22:43.279 --> 00:22:45.680
with this page? And a lot of the times it'll

331
00:22:45.720 --> 00:22:48.519
he'll be like, clear your cash or in your cookies,

332
00:22:48.960 --> 00:22:51.960
and then try it again. It probably will just reset everything.

333
00:22:52.319 --> 00:22:56.599
But when your you don't need to manually do that,

334
00:22:56.920 --> 00:23:00.480
clear your browsing history, your cash, your cookies. If you're

335
00:23:00.480 --> 00:23:05.519
in the private browsing modes, the incognitos, the what else

336
00:23:05.640 --> 00:23:08.839
was it? The incognito mode, the in private mode, the

337
00:23:08.880 --> 00:23:11.559
private browsing, you don't need to manually go in and

338
00:23:11.599 --> 00:23:15.279
clear all that stuff because private browsing modes they don't

339
00:23:15.319 --> 00:23:19.359
save your browsing history, your cased pages, or cookies, so

340
00:23:19.440 --> 00:23:26.680
there isn't anything in there to delete. So and it

341
00:23:26.759 --> 00:23:33.759
really it's it's it affects it to where if somebody

342
00:23:33.839 --> 00:23:36.200
else is to get on, say you're using your laptop,

343
00:23:36.319 --> 00:23:39.759
like I've got my laptop here and I'm in the

344
00:23:39.799 --> 00:23:45.000
incognito mode and so it's private browsing and it's not

345
00:23:45.119 --> 00:23:48.160
saving all of that information. So then let's say someone else,

346
00:23:48.480 --> 00:23:51.119
Let's say my husband gets on my laptop to do

347
00:23:51.200 --> 00:23:55.880
something on the internet. It doesn't save any of that.

348
00:23:56.200 --> 00:24:00.000
So if he went to history to find a website

349
00:24:00.119 --> 00:24:02.119
I that he wanted to look at that maybe I

350
00:24:02.240 --> 00:24:04.279
was just looking at, it's not going to show up

351
00:24:04.319 --> 00:24:09.279
because it was private browsing mode. So that helps. If

352
00:24:09.319 --> 00:24:12.640
you are planning a surprise for somebody and you know,

353
00:24:12.759 --> 00:24:15.640
like your spouse or whatever, and or if you both share,

354
00:24:15.920 --> 00:24:20.319
you know, and you share computers and stuff, you know,

355
00:24:20.400 --> 00:24:23.559
they can't like go into the into the browsing history

356
00:24:23.599 --> 00:24:25.599
and go let me see what surprise they're planning and

357
00:24:26.000 --> 00:24:29.000
stuff like that. So some people like it, some people

358
00:24:29.759 --> 00:24:32.559
don't use it. They just like I said, they go

359
00:24:32.640 --> 00:24:35.200
in every so often manually to clear all that stuff.

360
00:24:35.319 --> 00:24:38.720
So again up to you. It's an option if you

361
00:24:38.920 --> 00:24:40.640
if you want to use it, but just remember the

362
00:24:40.680 --> 00:24:49.640
private browsing. It doesn't it's only device specific. So it's

363
00:24:49.759 --> 00:24:53.240
not going to let me see here, it's not going

364
00:24:53.319 --> 00:24:58.160
to it's it's not going to have any effect on

365
00:24:58.400 --> 00:25:01.240
how do I want to say this, it's device specific,

366
00:25:01.319 --> 00:25:06.079
it's not going to have any effect on the website itself.

367
00:25:06.960 --> 00:25:12.759
It's only on your device. It's not tracking the cookies

368
00:25:12.799 --> 00:25:17.920
from that website, the cash, the browsing history on your device.

369
00:25:19.079 --> 00:25:27.240
So just keep that in mind and remember that the

370
00:25:27.599 --> 00:25:30.680
different ways to check the safety of a website, it's

371
00:25:30.720 --> 00:25:34.640
always good. And another thing that helps with the safety

372
00:25:34.640 --> 00:25:39.240
of websites is your antivirus and anti malware software. You've

373
00:25:39.240 --> 00:25:41.559
got it on you've got it running twenty four to seven,

374
00:25:41.720 --> 00:25:44.319
you have it on your all of your devices that

375
00:25:44.319 --> 00:25:48.119
are connected to the internet, including your phone. And say

376
00:25:48.119 --> 00:25:51.799
you accidentally click on a link, it should recognize if

377
00:25:51.799 --> 00:25:54.160
it's a bad link and come up and tell you

378
00:25:54.559 --> 00:25:57.319
we've detected that this is a malicious site. This is

379
00:25:57.359 --> 00:26:01.440
a bad site. Ever, it's going to say, and then

380
00:26:01.480 --> 00:26:03.559
it's going to give you the option to say, hey, Nope,

381
00:26:03.680 --> 00:26:06.920
I don't want to go there, or okay, yes I'm

382
00:26:07.240 --> 00:26:09.519
I'm willing to take the risk, and so yes I'm

383
00:26:09.559 --> 00:26:11.759
going to go there to that site. But it gives

384
00:26:11.759 --> 00:26:15.519
you the option to not get into that into that

385
00:26:15.559 --> 00:26:20.160
bad site. So that's another way. But just remember the

386
00:26:20.200 --> 00:26:23.480
ways to do the research. You know, check out the

387
00:26:23.599 --> 00:26:25.920
u r L. Make sure it has the S after

388
00:26:25.960 --> 00:26:30.359
the HTTP. You can check their security certificate like we

389
00:26:30.440 --> 00:26:34.599
showed you just to the left of the of the

390
00:26:34.640 --> 00:26:37.640
website's name up in the search or up in the

391
00:26:37.799 --> 00:26:40.759
where the u r L is. And then you can

392
00:26:40.799 --> 00:26:44.400
also do some you should do some online research. Use

393
00:26:44.440 --> 00:26:48.119
those online tools. The u r L void, go in

394
00:26:48.160 --> 00:26:52.079
and check out the reputation. Go in and check out

395
00:26:52.079 --> 00:26:54.519
the who is information so you can see who the

396
00:26:54.599 --> 00:26:58.519
registrar is. You can see when the domain was set up,

397
00:27:00.039 --> 00:27:03.759
and then use that Google Transparency report to see if

398
00:27:03.759 --> 00:27:08.839
they've if Google has found anything that they consider unsafe

399
00:27:09.119 --> 00:27:13.519
on that site. And then the reputation one on the

400
00:27:13.799 --> 00:27:17.400
URL void. That is really quite interesting that it's going

401
00:27:17.480 --> 00:27:22.480
to check all of those different sites that are tracking

402
00:27:23.039 --> 00:27:26.759
websites reputation to see if the site you want to

403
00:27:27.079 --> 00:27:30.559
that you're researching shows up in any of those. So

404
00:27:32.200 --> 00:27:34.400
it's a lot of great information on how you can

405
00:27:35.079 --> 00:27:37.960
check the safety of a website. Don't forget you're going

406
00:27:38.000 --> 00:27:40.240
to want to have your antivirus anti malware on all

407
00:27:40.319 --> 00:27:43.880
your devices that are connected to the Internet. It's just

408
00:27:43.920 --> 00:27:46.440
another way to help you stay safe when you're out

409
00:27:46.480 --> 00:27:49.720
there browsing and searching for things. And when you are

410
00:27:49.759 --> 00:27:52.440
out there browsing and searching, a lot of times you'll

411
00:27:52.440 --> 00:27:57.440
see in the search results they're sponsored ads that come up,

412
00:27:58.119 --> 00:28:02.880
and it'll say right underneath the r L or the

413
00:28:04.200 --> 00:28:07.720
name of the website, it'll say sponsored ad or just

414
00:28:07.759 --> 00:28:11.519
say sponsored. You know, scammers will hang out in those

415
00:28:11.519 --> 00:28:14.400
sponsored ads too, because they know that that kind of

416
00:28:14.440 --> 00:28:17.039
gets people's attention and they'll be like, oh, yeah, I

417
00:28:18.039 --> 00:28:20.920
want that well, you know whatever it is at that discount,

418
00:28:21.200 --> 00:28:24.039
and they'll click on the link through the sponsored ad. Well,

419
00:28:24.400 --> 00:28:30.079
you can see the website url that shows up in

420
00:28:30.160 --> 00:28:34.599
the in the Google search, and then go to that

421
00:28:35.480 --> 00:28:39.200
url yourself, that company's website yourself. You don't need to

422
00:28:39.200 --> 00:28:41.720
click on it through the sponsored ad. If you scroll

423
00:28:41.759 --> 00:28:45.559
down a little farther, you'll probably find that website listed,

424
00:28:45.720 --> 00:28:48.079
but it won't be a sponsored ad. Go into it

425
00:28:48.119 --> 00:28:51.640
that way and check to see if there really is

426
00:28:51.720 --> 00:28:55.200
that ad in there, because sometimes scammers hang out in

427
00:28:55.240 --> 00:28:59.319
those sponsored ads, and it's really companies paying for these

428
00:28:59.400 --> 00:29:03.839
ads and having them show up in the first couple

429
00:29:03.960 --> 00:29:08.200
of search results, and scammers know again that people are

430
00:29:08.240 --> 00:29:10.640
doing that, and so they will hang out in those

431
00:29:10.640 --> 00:29:14.119
sponsored ads as well. So be very careful with your

432
00:29:14.160 --> 00:29:18.680
website searches, do your research, have your anti virus anti

433
00:29:18.720 --> 00:29:21.839
malware software running all of the time on all your devices,

434
00:29:22.359 --> 00:29:28.480
and stay safe with your web browsing until next time.
